Sights and sounds of McMurdo Station, an American Antarctic research center located on the southern tip of Ross Island on the shore of McMurdo Sound, 2,200 miles (3,500 km) due south of New Zealand. The station is the largest community in Antarctica, supporting up to 1,258 residents. McMurdo Station serves as America's Antarctic science facility; it is also the logistics base for half the continent.
