Some onsen have spruced up their townscapes, others have unified the management of individual inns to cut costs, and yet others have benefited from public financial support.
With a 1,300-year history, Arima Onsen in Kobe is one of the nation's leading hot spring resorts and was a favorite retreat of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a famed warlord of the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1603). In May, the onsen was struck by an "earthquake" in the shape of the new flu.
Following the confirmation of the nation's first new-flu infection in the city in May, 25,000 people canceled overnight stays in that month and June, inflicting financial damages exceeding 500 million yen on the resort.
