At the crucial U.N. climate conference that ended in Copenhagen on Saturday, Japan's new government achieved a modest success by assisting in the conclusion of a political deal by offering an ambitious emissions-cut target and financial support, in contrast to the previous government that was often seen as a villain at climate talks. With the deadline for global negotiations to forge a new framework to fight climate change beyond 2012 extended to late next year, the government of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is now required to set the details of its climate policy on how to achieve its pledge to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.
