Patricia Prelock, is Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Vermont and Professor of Communication Sciences & Disorders; with a secondary appointment in Pediatrics in the College of Medicine. Dr. Prelock's background is as a speech-language pathologist and is well known for her collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to understanding genetic disorders. In her presentation today, Dr. Prelock will challenge the audience to imagine their most difficult social encounter and the strategies they used to regulate their feelings and understand the perspective of others in the situation. Then imagine being unable to make sense of the gestures and facial expressions used, misunderstanding the language uttered, and failing to recognize the context in which the challenging event occurred. She will explain the unique challenges and unrecognized exceptionalities of individuals with autism and what might help them negotiate the 'neurotypical' world in which they live. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
