Both towers form part of the decommissioned Athlone coal-fired power station and have become unsafe following the collapse of the strengthening rings around one of them in February. They were demolished in the interests of public safety.
Taken from a distance at Rhodes Memorial, this video shows the demolition of Cape Town's Athlone cooling towers at 12:00 on 22 August 2010. Around 5 km away in a straight line, so you only hear the rumble of the explosion after the towers are already down. The towers come down at around 0:35 into the video.
