On October 27th 1969, a devastating earthquake (magnitude of 6.4) damaged many buildings in Banja Luka and the surrounding area. The severe earthquake in the wider Banja Luka area of Yugoslavia killed 20, seriously injured 150, and left 65,000 homeless. Banja Luka, then a city of about 50,000 inhabitants, located about 240 miles west of Belgrade, had about 60 percent of the dwellings razed. Three neighboring towns were destroyed. Among the major buildings razed by the shock were the city hall, cultural center, 15 schools, and 5 dormitories. A textile factory damaged during the earthquake began leaking sulphuric acid and other chemicals, contaminating the river and water supply.
In the entire area of destruction, total of 86 thousand apartments, 266 schools and 592 cultural, health, social and business facilities were partially damaged or completely destroyed. A large building called Titanik in the center of the city was razed to the ground, and the area was later turned into a central public square. With contributions from Yugoslavia and from all over the world, Banja Luka was repaired and rebuilt.
